You're playing baseball, a game that you enjoy. But you get to a certain point in life where you kind of want to have your own setup. "Everyone's got roommates," said Boyer, 30, who lives in an apartment in Middletown. Rock Cats infielder Brad Boyer, a teammate of Broshuis with the Defenders in 20, has seen little change in the living conditions during his nine-year career. But most of the players selected in the 40-round draft each year don't receive a significant signing bonus.īroshuis relied on that bonus money during his six minor league seasons, but he noticed a common theme at each minor league stop - players struggling to stretch their paychecks, sharing apartments or living with host families, and relying on the locker room spread for meals.įour years after Broshuis left baseball, the story is the same. It didn't seem quite right for me."īroshuis was a fifth-round draft pick in 2004, so he received a six-figure signing bonus. "He was trying to save $20 a month to send back to her, and it was just so hard for him to do that. "He had a fiance back home who was pregnant," Broshuis said. It's estimated that less than 10 percent of players on Class A rosters will spend one day in the major leagues and only about 3 percent will play multiple years in the majors.īroshuis recalls meeting a player from Venezuela during his first season of professional baseball. More than 1,000 get drafted each year in the Major League Baseball draft, but only a small percentage make it out of the minors. So, for much of the season, there are fewer than 1,000 players in the major leagues. There are 30 major league teams, and each team has 25 players on its roster until rosters expand to 40 Sept. They are, of course, making a choice to chase a dream, which is to make the major leagues, where the minimum salary for 2014 is $500,000 and the average salary for 2013 was $3.39 million. Most players try to save for the season with temporary offseason jobs or they rely on financial help from parents. While more experienced minor leaguers make a few hundred dollars a month more, the minor league salary never amounts to much, given that players are paid only during the season. At Triple A, the highest level in the minor leagues, players earn at least $2,400 a month.
